Tasks of the National Church Assembly

The National Church Assembly meets once a year in a working session and whenever necessary. The National Church Assembly also meets in solemn sessions (Article 21 of the Statute).

The responsibilities of the National Assembly of the Church are as follows:

  • It supports the rights and activities of the Romanian Orthodox Church;
  • to approve regulations for the application of the present Statute with regard to areas of activity given to its competence by the Holy Synod;
  • on the proposal of the Patriarch of Romania, elect the members of the National Church Council;
  • adopts general measures for the support of the Church’s cultural, social-philanthropic, economic and foundational establishments;
  • establishes the means of support for central Church bodies and institutions;
  • examines and approves the annual general report of the National Church Council on the activity in the Romanian Orthodox Church and decides on the measures to be taken for the proper conduct of Church life;
  • approves the budgetary execution account and the financial-accounting balance sheet of the Patriarchal Administration, the Orthodox Biblical and Missionary Institute and the central ecclesiastical institutions with missionary purposes;
  • approves the general budget of the Patriarchal Administration, of the Orthodox Biblical and Missionary Institute and of the central missionary Church institutions;
  • approves unitary measures concerning the administration of movable and immovable property owned or used by the worship units of the entire Romanian Orthodox Church, as well as by the foundational ones;
  • approves social, cultural, educational and communicational projects of the Romanian Orthodox Church;
  • Establishes the means to help Romanians living abroad;
