Duties of the Standing Synod

The Standing Synod takes valid decisions by consensus or by a vote of half plus one of the members present.

The Standing Synod exercises the following functions between the sessions of the Holy Synod:

  • Expresses the official position of the Romanian Orthodox Church in its relations with the State and in matters of general interest to society;
  • Supports, in various forms, the teaching of Religion in state, private and denominational schools;
  • initiates and supports the translation, revision, editing and distribution of the Holy Scriptures and books of worship, including the Akathist Hymns, the Church calendar, theological textbooks and Religion textbooks
  • points out to the Holy Synod syncretistic and confusing theological and spiritual literature;
  • decides on the alienation in any way (sale, exchange, donation, transfer of litigious rights, etc.) of the ecclesiastical immovable property of the Romanian Patriarchate, with the exception of sacred property, which is inalienable.

The Standing Synod, at the request of the Patriarch of Romania or of its members, examines and formulates proposals on matters to be brought before the Holy Synod for debate. The Standing Synod shall also exercise other attributions given by the Holy Synod or by statute and regulations. The Standing Synod informs the Holy Synod, for its approval, of the decisions taken during its meetings (Art. 17-18 of the Statute).
