Metropolises

Canonically and administratively, dioceses and archdioceses are grouped into metropolises. The metropolises inside and outside the borders of the country are headed by a metropolitan (art. 110 of the Statute).

The metropolitan is the canonical head of a metropolis, exercises the rights and fulfils the duties prescribed by the Holy Canons, by ecclesiastical tradition and by the present statute. The title of the metropolitan is that of the archdiocese over which he presides and of the metropolis over which he leads. He bears the distinctive sign of the cross on the koukoulion, with a kamilavka (Art. 114 of the Statute).

The Metropolitan, together with the archbishops, bishops, and assistant-bishops of the suffragan dioceses, make up the Metropolitan Synod. The Metropolitan Synod coordinates the common activities of the dioceses of the Metropolis, within the limits set out by the Holy Canons and the statutory and regulatory norms in force (art. 111 of the Statute).
