The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church opens its session in Bucharest

The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church has opened its working session this morning, 25 February 2016, in the Synodal Hall of the Patriarchal Residence in Bucharest. His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel chairs the Holy Synod in accordance to the Statutes of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

In the introductory word addressed to the members of the Holy Synod, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel announced that during today’s session, four Romanian venerable fathers will be canonized, namely Pious Saints Daniel and Misael of Turnu Monastery, and Pious Saints Neophyte and Meletios of Stânișoara Monastery, within the Archdiocese of Râmnic.

It is of great joy that these holy and venerable ascetics have sanctified the land of Wallachia by their prayers and spiritual feats”, His Beatitude said.

The local proclamation of the canonization will take place in September this year, in Râmnicu Vâlcea city.

Another item on the agenda is the Religious Education of the Orthodox Christian Youth.

This subject is also reflected in the constant concern of the (Romanian) Patriarchate and of the Holy Synod to enhance programs, textbooks and the pastoral approach to youth”, His Beatitude noted.

A very special attention will be directed to the Romanian Diaspora”, the Romanian Patriarch went on saying, “to which a special responsibility has to be granted”.

The Head of the Romanian Orthodox Church also said that there are “some perspectives to establish new dioceses in the West”, and emphasized the fact that the Romanian Diaspora, “representing a new phenomenon in this large form”, has negative implications in our homeland because “the number of funerals surpasses the number of baptisms, while in the Diaspora the number of baptisms is three times bigger than the number of funerals, due to the fact that most of the people living in the Diaspora are young”.
