Visit to Popăuţi Monastery

Today, 7 November 2015, His Beatitude Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, visited Popăuţi Monastery in Botoşani area of the Archdiocese of Iaşi.

The Primate of the Romanian Orthodox Church was met by lots of faithful, priests and officials, representatives of the local authorities. On this occasion, His Eminence Teofan, Metropolitan of Moldova and Bucovina, delivered a welcome speech in the new church of the monastic settlement.

The Patriarch of Romanian delivered a speech in which he congratulated the abbot, archimandrite Ioan Harpa, and the monastic community for the works done at this monastic settlement. Then, the Primate of the Romanian Orthodox Church offered the abbot, for the church monastery, a blessing cross, as well as several liturgical books and of spiritual benefit. The Patriarch of Romania also offered small icons depicting the Mother of God to the faithful present.

The Very Reverend Archimandrite Ioan Harpa offered His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel an icon of Saint Hierarch Nicholas, protector of the monastery, on behalf of the monastic community.

At the end, His Beatitude visited the old church (historical monument) of Popăuţi Monastery.

The old church was founded by Holy Ruler Prince Stephen the Great, with Saint Hierarch Nicholas as patron saint. The place of worship was built in 1496. The beginning of the 3rd millennium brought a rehabilitation process to this historical church, both inside and outside. A large part of the original inside painting of the church was recuperated. The new church dedicated to the Protection of the Mother of God was built in six months, in 2002, and then painted and endowed with furniture from 2006-2013.
