BIOGRAPHICAL DATA

  • He was born on January 24, 1949, son of Andrei and Elena Andreicuț, in the village of Oarța de Sus, Maramureș County. He was baptized Ioan.

 

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • 1967-1971 – he was a pupil at the “Gheorghe Pop de Băsești” School Group in Cehul Silvaniei, Sălaj County;
  • 1971-1972 – attended the Faculty of Railway Construction in Bucharest;
  • 1976-1978 – studies at the University Theological Institute in Sibiu;
  • 1978 – ordained a celibate priest by His Eminence Teofil Herineanu, Archbishop of Cluj, in Turda, Cluj County;
  • 1985 – he is transferred, at the request of His Grace Emilian Birdaș, Bishop of Alba Iulia, to the parish “Maieri I” in Alba Iulia, being appointed administrative vicar of the Diocese of Alba Iulia;
  • February 1990 – he was elected and ordained Assistant-Bishop of the Diocese of Alba Iulia, in June of the same year he was elected and enthroned titular Bishop;
  • 1991-2011 – Professor of Ethics and Orthodox Spirituality at the “1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia;
  • 1998 – defends his doctoral thesis at the Theological Institute of University Degree in Bucharest entitled Spovedanie și comuniune în spiritualitatea ortodoxă (Confession and Communion in Orthodox Spirituality), with Rev. Fr. acad. Dumitru Popescu as supervisor;
  • 1998 – receives the dignity of Archbishop, with the elevation of the Alba Iulia Episcopate to the rank of Archdiocese;
  • 2000-2008 – Dean of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology at the “1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia;
  • 2011 – was elected Metropolitan of Cluj, Alba, Crișana and Maramureș, being installed by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel on 25 March 2011, in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Cluj-Napoca. Following the administrative and ecclesiastical reorganization in Transylvania, he is Metropolitan of Cluj, Maramureș and Sălaj;
  • Since 2011 he has been Professor of Orthodox Ethics and Spirituality at the Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca;
  • Since 2012 he is a doctoral supervisor for the discipline of Orthodox Ethics and Spirituality at the “Isidor Todoran” Doctoral School of Theology at the “Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca.
