BIOGRAPHICAL DATA

  • He was born on 6 June 1944, son of Haralambie and Elena Argatu, in Cracăul-Negru, Neamț County. He was baptised, receiving the name Constantin.

 

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • 1951-1955 – attends primary and secondary school in the village of Cracăul-Negru and between 1956-1958 continues secondary school in Balțătești commune, Neamț County;
  • 1964 – graduates from the Orthodox Theological Seminary of Neamț Monastery;
  • 1964-1968 – studies at the Theological Orthodox Institute of University Level in Sibiu, graduating in 1968, with a bachelor thesis entitled: Lupta profeților împotriva formalismului (The Prophets’ Struggle against Formalism) defended under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Prof. Nicolae Neaga;
  • 6 September 1964 – is ordained celibate deacon, then, on 8 September 1964, priest and spiritual father, by His Eminence Teofil Herineanu, Archbishop of Vad, Feleac and Cluj;
  • 1 October 1964 – 1 September 1966 – serves as parish priest at Tioltiur parish in the Gherla Deanery and then, by transfer in the interest of service, at Inău parish, Târgu Lăpuș Deanery, from 1st September 1966 to 1st November 1971;
  • 1 November 1971 – enters the monastic life at Căldărușani Monastery, Ilfov County, where he lives until 1 January 1974;
  • 31 December 1972 – is tonsured a monk at Căldărușani Monastery, by His Grace Antonie Plămădeală, Patriarchal Assistant-Bishop, receiving the name Calinic;
  • 1972-1974 – fulfils the duties of museographer and secretary of Căldărușani Monastery;
  • 1 January 1974 – 1 August 1977 – lives as monk at Cernica Monastery, Ilfov County;
  • 1 August 1977 – 1 March 1981 – is abbot of Sinaia Monastery, Prahova County;
  • 1 March 1981 – 1 November 1985 – is abbot of Cernica Monastery, Ilfov County;
  • 17 November 1985 – is ordained as Assistant-Bishop of the Diocese of Râmnic and Argeș, with the title Argeșeanul and with residence at Curtea de Argeș Monastery;
  • 4 April 1990 – is appointed locum tenes bishop of the Diocese of Arges (re-established by the Holy Synod decision from 12 February 1990)
  • 27 September 1990 – is elected Bishop of Arges, being enthroned on 18 November 1990 by His Beatitude Patriarch Teoctist, along with a host of hierarchs of the Romanian Orthodox Church, including His Eminence Nestor, Metropolitan of Oltenia, His Grace Epifanie, Bishop of Buzău, and His Grace Gherasim, Bishop of Râmnic;
  • 19 June 2009 – is appointed Archbishop by decision of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, as a result of the elevation of the Diocese of Argeș and Muscel to the rank of Archdiocese.
