BIOGRAPHICAL DATA

  • He was born on 9 May 1977, in Căianu Mic, Bistrița-Năsăud County, son of Vasile and Ana. He was baptized, receiving the name Marius Dan.

 

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • 1983-1990 – attends primary and most of the secondary school in Spermezeu, Bistrița-Năsăud County, and the 8th grade (1990-1991) at the Secondary School “St. Constantine Brâncoveanu” in Cluj-Napoca;
  • 1991-1996 – is pupil at the Orthodox Theological Seminary “Saint Metropolitan Dosoftei” in Suceava;
  • 1996-2000 – studies at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the “Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca, the Pastoral Theology Department;
  • 1998-2003 – fulfils the duties of secretary of the office of His Eminence Bartolomeu Anania, Archbishop of Vad, Feleac and Cluj;
  • 1999-2002 – is editor at Radio Renașterea in Cluj-Napoca;
  • 2000-2001 – attends Advanced Studies/MA at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the “Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca, the Theology-History Department;
  • 2001 – works as a substitute religion teacher at the “Ioan Bob” School in Cluj-Napoca;
  • 23 June 2003 – he is tonsured into monasticism at the Saint John the Baptist Monastery in Alba Iulia by His Eminence Andrei, Archbishop of Alba Iulia, having His Grace Vasile of Someș, Assistant-Bishop of the Archdiocese of Vad, Feleac and Cluj, as his monastic godfather, and on 24 June 2003 he is ordained hierodeacon by His Eminence Andrei, Archbishop of Alba Iulia;
  • 2003-2005 – is editor at Radio Reîntregirea in Alba Iulia;
  • 6 January 2004 – is ordained a hieromonk by His Grace Andrei, Archbishop of Alba Iulia, fulfilling the duties of lecturer and spiritual father at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Alba Iulia;
  • 2004-2005 – attends postgraduate studies at the Universities of Leeds and Durham (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland);
  • 24 April 2005 – is elevated to the rank of protosyncellus by His Eminence Bartolomeu Anania, Metropolitan of Cluj, Alba, Crișana and Maramureș, and appointed ecclesiarch of the Metropolitan Cathedral, teacher and spiritual father at the Orthodox High School Theological Seminary in Cluj Napoca;
  • 16 March 2008 – is elevated to the rank of archimandrite by His Eminence Bartolomeu Anania, Metropolitan of Cluj, Alba, Crișana and Maramureș, in the Metropolitan Cathedral in Cluj-Napoca;
  • 2 April 2008 – defends his doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the “Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca, with the theme: Orthodox and Greek-Catholics in Transylvania (1874-1916). Convergences and Divergences, under the guidance of Rev. Prof. Dr. Alexandru Moraru;
  • 5 March 2008 – elected Bishop of the newly established Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of Northern Europe by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church;
  • 2 May 2008 – is ordained bishop, on Friday of the Bright Week, the feast of Life-Giving Spring, in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Cluj-Napoca, by His Eminence Bartolomeu Anania, Metropolitan of Cluj, Alba, Crișana and Maramureș, His Eminence Serafim, Metropolitan of Germany, Central and Northern Europe and His Eminence Andrei, Archbishop of Alba Iulia, along with a choir of hierarchs.
  • 6 July 2008 – is enthroned as the first Bishop of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of Northern Europe, in the Saint Hierarch Sava Serbian Cathedral of in Stockholm, by His Eminence Serafim, Romanian Orthodox Metropolitan of Germany, Central and Northern Europe and His Eminence Metropolitan Nifon, Archbishop of Târgoviște, Patriarchal Exarch, delegate of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel;
  • 20 September 2014 – defends his doctoral thesis at the Faculty of History of the “Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca, with the theme: History, Culture and Spirituality in the Țibleș Valleys Area, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ioan Bolovan.
