BIOGRAPHICAL DATA

  • He was born on 6 April 1962, son of Dumitru and Maria Nicolăescu, in Godeanu commune, Mehedinți county. He was baptised with the name Nicolae

 

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • 1969-1977 – attends primary and secondary school in his native Godeanu, Mehedinți County;
  • 1977-1979 – pupil at the Industrial High School No. 3 in Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Mehedinți County;
  • 1979 – enters the monastic life at Topolnița Monastery, Mehedinți County;
  • 1979-1984 – pupil at the Orthodox High Theological Seminary in Craiova;
  • 20 July 1983 – enters the monastic order at Topolnița Monastery, Mehedinți County, being ordained hierodeacon on 6 August, by His Eminence Nestor Vornicescu, Metropolitan of Oltenia;
  • 7 February 1985 – is ordained a hieromonk by His Eminence Nestor Vornicescu, Metropolitan of Oltenia;
  • 1985-1994 – priest at Balotești parish, Mehedinți County;
  • 1989-1993 – studies at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology “Justinian the Patriarch” of the University of Bucharest;
  • 29 August 1990 – is elevated to the rank of protosyncellus by His Eminence Nestor Vornicescu, Metropolitan of Oltenia;
  • 1990-1992 – is abbot of Topolnița Monastery, Mehedinți County;
  • 1991-2001 – is abbot of Vodița Monastery, Mehedinți County;
  • 1997-1998 – attends an intensive Greek language course at the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature of the National University “Kapodistria” in Athens (Greece), as a scholarship holder of the “Bethlehem” Foundation in Athens;
  • 1997-2000 – attends postgraduate studies in Patrology and History of Dogmas at the “Kapodistria” National University in Athens (Greece), as a scholarship holder of the “Bethlehem” Foundation in Athens;
  • 2000 – defends his MA thesis at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the “Kapodistria” National University in Athens (Greece), entitled: The Romanian Neo-Hesychast tradition from after Saint Paisie Velicikovski to the Present Day, obtaining the arista honour (exceptional);
  • 20 July 2001 – is elevated to the rank of archimandrite by His Eminence Teofan Savu, Metropolitan of Oltenia;
  • 19 August 2001 – is ordained Assistant-Bishop of the Archdiocese of Craiova, with the title Gorjeanul, by His Eminence Teofan, Metropolitan of Oltenia, with the responsibility of coordinating the Social-Missionary and Administrative Departments of the Archdiocese of Craiova;
