BIOGRAPHICAL DATA

  • He was born on 5 March 1970, son of Gheorghe and Emilia Șpan, in Gura Râului, Sibiu County. He was baptized Ciprian Nicolae.

 

TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • 1988 – Graduated from “Gheorghe Lazăr” High School of Mathematics and Physics in Sibiu;
  • September 1988 – July 1989 – performed military service at the Military Unit 01140 in Lugoj;
  • 1989-1993 – studies at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology “Andrei Saguna” in Sibiu;
  • 21 January 1994 – ordained celibate deacon at the chapel of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology “Andrei Șaguna” in Sibiu by His Grace Serafim Făgărășeanul, Assistant-Bishop of the Archdiocese of Sibiu;
  • 6 March 1994 – ordained celibate priest at the chapel of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology “Andrei Saguna” in Sibiu by His Grace Serafim Făgărășeanul, Assistant-Bishop of the Archdiocese of Sibiu;
  • 1994-1998 – doctoral studies at the Institute of Orthodox Theology “Saint Serge” in Paris (France);
  • 1994-2001 – served as a priest and spiritual father at the Convent of Our Lady of All Protection Orthodox Monastery, at Bussy-en-Othe, Yonne (France);
  • 15 December 1999 – is canonically transferred from the Archdiocese of Sibiu to the Romanian Orthodox Metropolitan of Western and Southern Europe in Paris, and is appointed parish priest of the parish of Saint Paraskeva and Saint Genevieve in Paris (France);
  • March 2001 – appointed diocesan counsellor for liturgical and missionary affairs by His Eminence Iosif Pop, Metropolitan of Western and Southern Europe;
  • 21 June 2001 – was tonsured into monasticism at the Hermitage of St. Siluan Athonite of Lăzești, Alba County, by Fr. Rafail Noica, receiving the name Siluan;
  • 5 July 2001 – he is elected by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church as Assistant-Bishop of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of Western and Southern Europe, with the title of Marsilianul (of Marsilia);
  • 1 September 2001 – 1 July 2004 – He serves as Abbot of the Monastery of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross at Malvialle, Puy de Dôme (France);
  • 20 October 2001 – elevated to the rank of archimandrite by His Eminence Iosif, Metropolitan of Western and Southern Europe;
  • 21 October 2001 – consecrated bishop in the church of St. Joseph in Bordeaux by His Eminence Iosif, Metropolitan of Western and Southern Europe, with responsibility for the parishes and communities of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of Western and Southern Europe in Spain, Portugal and the South of France, and for the good development of monastic life in the Metropolis;
  • August 2004 – is transferred to the Romanian Orthodox Vicariate of Italy, receiving the pastoral, missionary, administrative and representational tasks of the Romanian Orthodox Church by Metropolitan Grammata 264/16 August 2004;
  • 5 March 2008 – elected Bishop of Italy by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, being enthroned on 8 May 2008 by His Eminence Iosif Pop, Metropolitan of Western and Southern Europe, in Lucca (Italy);
  • 2013 – elected member of the Permanent Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church;August 2017 – appointed member of the Primary Consistory of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
