BIOGRAPHICAL DATA

  • He was born on 4 June 1936, son of Caius and Vioara Seviciu, in Timișoara, Timiș County. He was baptized, receiving the name Traian Petru.

 

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • 1943-1953 – attends Primary School No. 3 and the application school of the Timișoara Normal School and the “Constantin Diaconovici Loga” High School in Timișoara (current High School No. 1 “Nikos Beloiannis”);
  • 1953-1957 – studies at the Theological Institute of University Level in Bucharest, where he defends his bachelor’s thesis entitled Hristologia și soteriologia la Sfântul Atanasie cel Mare (Christology and Soteriology at Saint Athanasius the Great), under the guidance of Rev. Prof. Dr. Ioan G. Coman;
  • 1957-1960 – he attends the courses of the Theological Institute of University Level in Bucharest, passing the admission exam in 1962;
  • 1 February 1961 – he is appointed teacher at the Orthodox Theological Seminary in Caransebeș;
  • 1 of October 1961 – he serves as diocesan secretary in Arad, and from 1 July 1962 in Timișoara;
  • 22 October 1961 – is ordained a celibate deacon by His Eminence Nicolae Corneanu, Metropolitan of Banat, in Arad Cathedral;
  • 1967-1968 – he attends a specialization internship at the Faculty of Protestant Theology in Neuchâtel and at the Ecumenical Institute in Bossey (Switzerland);
  • 10 March 1968 – is ordained priest by His Eminence Nicolae Corneanu, Metropolitan of Banat, in the Cathedral of Timișoara;
  • 1st April 1968 – is appointed administrative-vicar of the Archdiocese of Timișoara and Caransebeș;
  • 24 June 1969 – is tonsured a monk at Hodoș – Bodrog Monastery, Arad County, by His Eminence Nicolae Corneanu, Metropolitan of Banat;
  • 6 December 1970 – is raised to the rank of archimandrite by His Eminence Nicolae Corneanu, Metropolitan of Banat, at the Cathedral of Timișoara;
  • 1971-1972 – attends specialisation courses at the Faculty of Theology in Fribourg (Switzerland);
  • 5 June 1973 – defends his doctoral thesis with the title: Doctrina hristologică a Sfântului Chiril al Alexandriei în lumina tendințelor actuale de apropiere între Biserica Ortodoxă și vechile Biserici Orientale (The Christological Doctrine of St Cyril of Alexandria in the Light of Current Trends of Rapprochement between the Orthodox Church and the Oriental Orthodox Churches) at the Theological Institute of University Level in Bucharest, under the guidance of Rev. Prof. Dr. Ioan G. Coman;
  • 15 December 1975 – is elected Assistant-Bishop of the Archdiocese of Timișoara and Caransebeș, with the title of Lugoj (Lugojanul), and on 7 February 1977 he is enthroned by His Eminence Nicolae Corneanu, Metropolitan of Banat;
  • 30 September 1984 – is elected Bishop of Arad by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, and on 2 December 1984 he is enthroned in the Saint John the Baptist Cathedral in Arad, by His Eminence Nicolae Corneanu, Metropolitan of Banat;
  • 1994-2012 – Associate Professor at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology “Ilarion V. Felea” of the “Aurel Vlaicu” University of Arad;
  • 18 June 2009 – is elevated to the rank of Archbishop by decision of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, the ceremony of elevation of the Diocese of Arad to the rank of Archdiocese taking place on 28 November 2009, in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Arad, in the presence of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel.
