BIOGRAPHICAL DATA

  • He was born on August 23, 1954 to Petru and Elena Grifoni, in Bucharest. He was baptized Victor.

 

TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • 1962-1970 – Attended secondary school in Bucharest;
  • 1970-1974 – student at “Matei Basarab” High School in Bucharest;
  • 1974-1978 – studies at the Theological Institute of University Level in Sibiu, graduating with a bachelor’s thesis entitled Holy Fathers of the 4th century, Guides of the Spiritual Life;
  • 1978-1983 – works at the Publishing House of the Biblical and Orthodox Mission Institute (EIBMO) in Bucharest, as proof-reader and editorial secretary;
  • 1983-1990 – appointed editor of the Mitropolia Olteniei journal, being entrusted with the responsibility for the diocesan journal, theology and history books published by the Archdiocese of Craiova’s Publishing House of the Metropolis of Oltenia;
  • 1 October 1983 – enters the monastic life at the Lainici Monastery, Gorj County, with Prof. Vasile Prescure as godfather;
  • 26 October 1983 – he is ordained hierodeacon, and on 25 December 1983 he is ordained hieromonk;
  • 1984-1990 – Head of the Cabinet of His Beatitude Nestor, Metropolitan of Oltenia;
  • 26 October 1985 – ordained as a protosyncellus by His Eminence Nestor, Metropolitan of Oltenia;
  • 14 June 1987 – ordained archimandrite;
  • 1 August 1990 – appointed Superior of the Romanian Settlements in Jerusalem and Jordan, as well as Representative of the Romanian Orthodox Church to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, by His Beatitude Teoctist, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, serving until 1994;
  • 12 January 1994 – elected Patriarchal Assistant-Bishop, with the title of Ploieșteanul;
  • 2 February 1994 – he was ordained hierarch in the Cathedral of St. Spiridon-New in Bucharest, Patriarchal Chapel, by His Beatitude Patriarch Teoctist;
  • 2000-2009 – appointed Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church and Secretary of the Permanent Synod; he is also entrusted with the spiritual and administrative management of the Antim Monastery in Bucharest;
  • 18 June 2009 – he was elected Bishop of Slobozia and Călărași at the working session of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, and on 28 June 2009 he was enthroned by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel in the Episcopal Cathedral in Slobozia.
