BIOGRAPHICAL DATA

  • He was born on 22 July 1951, the son of parents Alexe and Stela Ciobotea, in the village of Dobrești, Bara commune, Timiș County. He was baptized Dan-Ilie

 

TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • 1958-1962 – attended primary school in his native village Dobrești, Timiș County;
  • 1962-1966 – secondary school in Lăpușnic, Timiș County;
  • 1966 – he started secondary school in Buziaș and continued his studies in Lugoj, at “Coriolan Brediceanu” Secondary School (1967-1970);
  • 1970-1974 – studies at the Orthodox University Theological Institute in Sibiu;
  • 1974-1976 – doctoral studies at the Orthodox Theological University Institute of Bucharest, Systematics Department, under the guidance of Fr. Prof. Dr. Dumitru Stăniloae;
  • 1976-1978 – studies at the Faculty of Protestant Theology of the University of Human Sciences in Strasbourg (France);
  • 1978-1980 – studies at the Faculty of Catholic Theology of the “Albert Ludwig” University of Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany);
  • 15 June 1979 – defends his doctoral thesis at the University of Strasbourg, entitled: Réflexion et vie chrétiennes aujourd’hui: Essai sur le rapport entre la théologie et la spiritualité (424 p.);
  • 31 October 1980 – an extended version of this thesis, prepared under the guidance of his mentor, Prof. Dr. Dumitru Stăniloae, is defended at the Orthodox Theological University Institute of Bucharest, with the title: Teologie și spiritualitate creștină. Raportul dintre ele și situaţia actuală;
  • 1980-1988 – lecturer at the Ecumenical Institute of Bossey (Switzerland);
  • 6 August 1987 – enters the monastic life at the Sihăstria Monastery, Neamț County, with the name Daniel, with Venerable Fr. Archim. Cleopa Ilie as his monastic godfather;
  • 14 August 1987 – he is ordained hieromonk, and on 15 August 1987 hieromonk;
  • 1988 – ordained protosyngellos and appointed patriarchal counsellor, director of the “Contemporary Theology and Ecumenical Dialogue” Sector;
  • 1988 – becomes lecturer in the Department of Christian Mission at the Orthodox University Theological Institute in Bucharest;
  • 12 February 1990 – elected Assistant-Bishop of the Archdiocese of Timișoara, with the title of Lugojanul, and on 4 March 1990 ordained Archbishop in the Metropolitan Cathedral;
  • 7 June 1990 – elected Archbishop of Jassy and Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bucovina;
  • 1 July 1990 – enthroned Archbishop of Jassy and Metropolitan of Moldavia and Bucovina;
  • 1992-2007 – Professor of Dogmatics and Pastoral Theology at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology “Dumitru Stăniloae” in Jassy;
  • 12 September 2007 – elected Archbishop of Bucharest, Metropolitan of Muntenia and Dobrudja and Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church;
  • 30 September 2007 – was enthroned Patriarch in the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest;
  • Since 2007 he is Professor of Pastoral Theology at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology “Justinian the Patriarch” in Bucharest.
